5 Things to Know About Your Photographer
1. Hire the photographer, not the studio. What you see isn't necessarily what you'get. Many studios subcontract to a rotating cast of photographers, so don't be fooled by an online gallery that's a conglomeration of work from multiple photographers. Make sure you see photographs taken by the person who will actually be at your wedding, then sit down with him or her (not a studio manager or an assistant) to discuss your event.
2. A photojournalistic style is critical. Magical spontaneous moments are just that: moments, here then gone. I'm always on the move at an event, unobtrusively capturing its spirit, emotion and energy. Don't get me wrong: poses are important, but much of the magic comes from the unexpected laughs and tears, the funky dance step from Grandpa, the small surprises that otherwise fade from memory.
3. Your photographer should be a storyteller. I love telling stories with pictures. To me, the most evocative images are the ones that make you feel the wonder, taste the cake, move with music. Make sure your photographer isn't a cookie-cutter, but wants to tell yourparticular story. You need experienced, not jaded. A great photographer will approach your event with a fresh eye, an ability to spot the specific, and lots and lots of memory cards!
4. And a computer whiz. In the digital age, photography is about more than the camera. Your photographer should be both an artist and an editor. Ask to see his or her retouching. You need someone who's got game, technically and creatively. That's why I constantly refresh my skills on the computer and the camera.
5. Like your photographer. You of all people know how important the chemistry between two people is!
